MentorLink

MentorLink is an exciting Metro Youth Partnership (MYP) opportunity for adults in Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo communities to mentor a youth.

All young people have the potential to thrive in life, but not all young people have the same access to the adult supports they need. By applying to be a mentor through Metro Youth Partnership you can be the difference in a young person’s life.

What is Mentoring?
Mentoring – the presence of positive adults offering support, advice, friendship, reinforcement and constructive examples – has proven effective for helping young people become asset rich and therefore successful in their lives.

Mentoring is all about building a healthy, positive relationship between a caring adult and a young person.

At its most basic level, mentoring helps a young person know that someone cares about him. Do you remember what it was like to be a teenager and all of the drama that went with it? Or, maybe you remember getting cut from the baseball team and wishing you had someone to talk to about it.

A mentor is a sounding board, a cheerleader, a guide, and a gateway to understanding new things.

You can be that friend!

What does it take to be a good mentor?
One of the most important things that you can do as a mentor is to “show up” on a consistent basis. Be there for your new friend. Be a role model about good communication, good fun, and good goals. You probably already have what it takes!

It helps to be a good conversationalist and listener, Do you enjoy sharing activities with others? Please remember that being a mentor is a two-way street: expect to be changed, too!

Most programs require a one-year commitment of about four hours per month. Research has shown that this amount of time is needed to really make a difference. Does this fit in your schedule?

How Can I Get Involved?
Interested? Have some time to give to a special friend? Want to make a difference in the life of a young person? Then, complete our application and fax it to 218-299-5336. You can also mail it to our office or drop it off during regular business hours:

Then, you will be interviewed, screened (pass background checks), oriented, matched, and supported along the way.
